Prospects for week

The word form Enniscorthy is that fish are still arriving on each tide so prospects for May are good. Some beats require rain while others will enjoy the lower water and should start accounting for fish.

3rd big flood helps clear river for the 17th

Posted on by Brian

In the last 4 weeks 3 big floods in succession have helped clean the river in advance of the opening day on 17 March. The SRT guage disapeared from view as the water rose – Brian Harvey’s pictures of the river over its banks at Clohamon and lower down stream on the 25th of January gives an idea of the scale of the flood.

Proposed Trip to the Redds on 26 November

Posted on by Brian

We are planning a trip to visit the spawning redds on Saturday 26 November weather permitting. Stephen Byrne of IFI  has kindly agreed to host the trip. This is always an interesting day out  and typically we would hope to see both evidence of spawning and catch sight on a few fish actually on the redds.

The plan ,subject to demand,  is to meet in the Car Park at the civic offices in Tullow at 10am.

If you are interested in going please email webmaster@slaneyrivertrust.ie with your interest and mobile number so that I can let you know in the event of cancellation due to water conditions or if plans change for any other reason.

Poaching not just an Irish problem

Posted on by Brian

In light of reports of poaching incidents across the country, the attached article on poaching on the Wye, shows that this is a problem big problem abroad as well.  Although it would appear that the widespread netting river pools is  more typically a problem of the North and Northwest we need to be vigilent on the Slaney.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation news letter includes reports indicating that Canadian and even Maine rivers are having improved runs of MSW atlantic salmon. See North America. Closer to home the grilse seem to be arriving at last with Simon Ashe at Ballynahinch reporting good fish in the west. A trip to the slaney last night (20/7/11) showned no sign of any new arrivals in the river.
