Salmon Summit in France

There were a huge range of scientific papers (see abstracts) presented at the Salmon Summit in France on 11 to 13 October.The Irish Times of 18 October reported on Ken Whelan’s comments on Salmon adapting to climate change .

Salmon on Red List of Vunerable Irish Fish Species

The atlantic salmon has been included on a Red List of 6 vunerable fish species in Ireland in a new report issued on 5.10.11. The eel is critically endangered and the salmon along with pollen, charr and various shads are considered vunerable.

Further Signs of Improved Atlantic Salmon Runs in North American

Study of Seal Predation

IFI are currently advertisng a tender to carry out a 2 year pilot study on the impact of seal predation on the Slaney and Moy estuaries. If this goes ahead it should provide a very interesting insight into how the salmon and seal populations intereact.

Catch and Release and Catch Again

There is an interesting piece in September’s “Field” concerning two fish in  Scotland released and immediately caught again. I have heard of a similar incident on the Blackwater where a few years ago a salmon took a worm immediately after being released-  has anyone had a similar experience here? replies to info@slaneyrivertrust.ie

Slaney Salmon over 35lbs

There is a thread on the Salmon fishing Forum looking for details on Salmon over 35 Lbs caught in Irish Rivers and not in Fred Bullers book. There is currently only one Slaney Salmon in the list. This is the large fish poached off the redds a number of years ago. In fact our Slaney catches page shows a second one caught in 1990 does anyone know of any others or have photos?

A report in yesterdays Atlantic Salmon Federation news highlights the penalties for illegal fishing in Newfoundland – a man with an untagged salmon got 1 months house arrest and a 5 year ban -see the  report on 7  cases of illegal fishing all of those convicted of fishing offences were banned from  the river or lake side for a period

Salmon Return to the Tolka

Poaching on the Redds

Todays IFI press release on a conviction for spearing salmon on the spawning gounds on the Newport river along with a photo of the 3 fish taken highlights the threat to our rivers. A fine of €1,750 will hopefully focus the minds of those tempted to try.
